Chapter 1

Danny

Danny could see the hands opening a small slit in the blinds across the street, followed by two eyes peeking out. It was Mrs. Goldman, who said she’d lived there in that same house for the past forty-five years. Danny’d met her before, and she was a pleasant, soft-spoken woman with a polite manner who would blush if she overheard someone saying a dirty word.

Of course, behind closed doors, people tend to be different. And whenever Danny would work on one of his projects in his garage, he made sure to take off his shirt and make a show of it. And as soon as he did, Mrs. Goldman’s blinds would crack open as if she had a sixth sense.

Danny would pretend not to see her because if he caught her staring, she might just die from embarrassment. But she wasn’t doing him any harm and if it made a lonely older woman happy to see him without his shirt, power sanding planks of wood for an outdoor table, then who was he to deny her that pleasure?

She saw him as the neighborhood hot dad, nothing more, nothing less, but she didn’t know the first thing about him. She didn’t even know his real name. Everyone around him knew him as Thomas Coleman. And they certainly didn’t know about the dragon that lived within him.

He’d probably give the poor old woman a heart attack if he showed her that side of himself.

His mind wasn’t on Mrs. Goldman, though. It was on his new neighbor, a petite blonde woman who lived alone. He didn’t notice if she had been staring at him, but she’d caught him staring at her. It was just that morning as she went for a jog in her short pink shorts and black sports bra. Danny couldn’t look away. He waved at her and smiled, a tacit admission that she caught him, and she smiled and waved back as if to let him know it didn’t bother her.

It was a simple action, the smile and wave, but Danny kept replaying it over and over in his head in slow motion until it started to feel like an image from a dream. Her hair was in a ponytail, bobbing up and down, and the sun was behind her, giving her a soft glow. Then, while she was mid-stride, she turned her head and made eye contact with Danny. Slowly her mouth formed into a smile and her left hand opened up for a quick wave.

Over and over again, it kept on popping into Danny’s head, like the hook to a catchy pop song that he’d catch himself humming without realizing he was doing it.

The only way to get it out of his head was to find a new image to replace it, which meant going over and introducing himself.

He’d played that through in his head, but never knew exactly what to say since he didn’t know anything about her and couldn’t predict her responses.
